The project focuses on Veṅkaṭanātha, also known as Vedānta Deśika, a South Indian philosopher and polymath whose traditional dates are 1269-1370. Veṅkaṭanātha wrote in different languages (Sanskrit, Prakrit, Maṇipravāḷam, and Tamil) and genres (commentaries, independent treatises, hymns, dramas, poems, and so on). He radically changed the theological school now known as Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta and influenced indirectly other philosophical schools as well, including Dvaita Vedānta and Śaivādvaita.
The project focuses on his intellectual figure and his contribution to the Sanskrit cosmopolis. The team will edit, translate, and study primarily his philosophical texts in Sanskrit and Maṇipravāḷam, highlighting in particular the historical turn he created in Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta.
Within Pandit, the team will upload information on manuscripts, editions, translations and studies of works by Veṅkaṭanātha and his immediate surrounding (such as his immediate predecessors and successors). Sites and people will also be updated or added whenever necessary and possible.
The project is financed by the FWF (V-400 "A South Indian philosophical synthesis: aikaśāstrya"). More information about the project can be found on their website.
