Avantivarman’s son Śaṅkaravarman was a ruler of Kashmir from the Utpala line. He came to the throne after a struggle for succession with his siblings. He was a patron of Bhallaṭa who wrote a Bhallaṭa‧śataka, and is mentioned by Jayantabhaṭṭa- author of Nyāyamañjarī and Āgamāḍambara.
